Introduction to Lens Materials

There are many types of lenses, so the materials used to make them are naturally different. In this issue, Jiayu Optical Lens will briefly introduce various types of lens materials for everyone.

AC: Acrylic Pmma, also known as acrylic or organic glass, is chemically named poly (methyl methacrylate), abbreviated as PMMA.

Characteristics: It is a thermoplastic with a light transmittance of 92-93%, a refractive index of 1.49, a density of 1.19, an Abbe number of 57.53, light weight, impact resistance, non fragility, easy dyeing, simple manufacturing process, but its heat resistance and wear resistance are inferior to glass.

TRX: Composite material (white cast material), an improved version of AC material, adding rubber components to AC material to enhance impact resistance and corrosion resistance.

CR39: A new eyewear material developed by PPG Columbia Chemical Company in the 39th round of research, commonly known as CR-39 or AllyDiethylene Glycol Carbonate, abbreviated as ADC resin.

Characteristics: It is a thermosetting plastic with a light transmittance of 89-92%, a refractive index of 1.502, a density of 1.32, and an Abbe number of 57.8

Lightweight, impact resistant, not fragile, easy to dye, less wear-resistant than glass, better than AC.

PC: commonly known as space film, polycarbonate.

Characteristics: It is a thermoplastic with a transmittance of 89.8%, a refractive index of 1.586, a density of 1.22, and an Abbe number of 30.

Lightweight, ultra-thin, and highly impact resistant, the material is commonly known as bulletproof glass after thickening, with low fatigue resistance and easy cracking.

Glass: Optical glass:

Characteristics: Transmittance greater than 91%, refractive index 1.523, density 2.53, Abbe number 58.7.

The material is hard and has good surface wear resistance, but it is too fragile and heavy.

TR: GrilamidTR transparent nylon raw material produced by Swiss EMS company, chemical name polyamide, available in TR 55 (basic grade of balanced properties), TR 70 (high glass transition temperature), TR 90 (extremely high dynamic strength) and other models.

Characteristics: It is a thermoplastic with a light transmittance of over 91.7%, a refractive index of 1.516, a density of 1.02, and an Abbe number of 52.

Light weight, chemical resistance and stress cracking resistance, high flexural fatigue strength, good toughness, easy coloring, but high cost.

TAC Polarized Lens : Triacetylcellulose triacetate cellulose

Characteristics: It is a thermoplastic with a light transmittance of 93% and a density of 1.23-1.34

Environmentally friendly, lightweight, high light transmittance, and with high flexibility, the price is relatively affordable, making it a mainstream product in the polarizing lens market.
